The North West of England is home to thousands of Muslims. In Blackburn, Preston, Burnley, Oldham, Rochdale and Manchester, Muslims constitute a significant proportion of the population. Bolton is a well known town situated in the heart of the North West, where many Muslims reside.
The Muslim youth of this area, and across England, are growing up in a multicultural and multi-religious society; which is seen by some to draw them away from the teaching of Islam. The impact of western culture is seen by many Muslims to have a negative effect on the cohesive standing of the Muslim communities. The greatest fear that haunts these communities is that the younger generation will adopt a more western lifestyle and eventually lose not only their cultural heritage but also, more importantly, their faith.
Throughout Britain individuals and organisation have come to realise that there are many deficiencies in the state educational system. Many faiths have resorted to the establishment of religious schools and colleges to counteract these deficiencies, and the Muslims are no different. Throughout the UK many Islamic schools are already running in an attempt to counteract these deficiencies. They have established or instigated movements to establish institutions of higher education and academic research, or developed private schools for the Muslim youth. It is an awe inspiring task which can only be undertaken by committed and faithful individuals. |
